Of the tons of footage and pictures that came out of the Mount St. Helens blast, May 18, 1980,  this gripping piece of video has become symbolic of the event.

Dave Crockett, who at the time was a reporter for KOMO-TV in Seattle, was covering the mountain in the weeks prior to the biggest volcanic eruption in the continental U.S. in several hundred years.

Crockett turned on this camera after the blast, watched as several  thousand feet of mountain blew into the sky.  What happened next was a scene from Dante's Inferno.  Crockett had to abandon his car, as a massive mudslide demolished the road.

Crockett began to head towards higher ground, away from the blast area.  His camera captured the pitch blackness of being inside the ash cloud and storm of the mountain.

Watch what has become the most legendary piece of video to come out of the eruption.
