It seems there's a day of the year set aside for virtually everything.  How about planning what's going to be on your headstone when you're gone?

Tuesday, April 6th, is National Plan Your Epitaph Day, or when to decide what final inscription you will leave to the world when you leave for good!

According to fans and those who follow this day,  it's dedicated to "the proposition that a forgettable gravestone is a fate worse than death."

According to the website hardiehouse.org - which was the #1 result in Google for this event :

"...Because, if you do nothing, someone else will put your name and dates on your gravestone, period. If you are terribly unlucky, they'll add something like "Dearly missed" or "Beloved Cousin" or maybe even worse.

Do not act as if you would live ten thousand
years. Death hangs over you.

--Marcus Aurelius

Don't give up your power over the most important words of your life. Take control: it's your life, it's your death, it's your stone -- YOU say something!"

The website includes a number of clever, witty statements left behind by the departed, including this classic from Julian Skaggs of West Virginia, who had the following carved on their headstone:

"I made an ash of myself."

So, as Tuesday April 6th approaches, perhaps take at least 5 minutes and ponder what final words you want put on your headstone or marker.  And no,  having a thumb pointing left or right with the words "I'm with stupid" inscribed is not really appropriate - unless you're a husband or wife and are buried side-by-side.

We prefer to focus on how best to utilize the time we have while we're on THIS side of the ground!
