At first, maybe we could understand a school or two, especially if they felt they were severely undermanned. But now this is getting ridiculous.

According to NW Cable News, a fifth high school has now forfeited their game coming up Friday the 28th with 2A powerhouse Archbishop Murphy high school from Everett.

Cedarcrest High School announced the forfeit, saying it was due in part to "competitive imbalance between their student athletes and ours."

Several other schools in the Cascade Conference have also voluntarily dropped their games, and now after the first forfeit or two, the other schools appear to be chiming into the thought that because Archbishop Murphy is a private school, and can draw students from a much larger geographical area, they have an advantage in athletics.

The forfeits included Murphy's Homecoming game, scheduled vs. Cedar Park this Friday. Instead, a team of former players and alumni will suit up against the school.

But there's still a chance for them to play this season. October 21st, they're scheduled against Olympic High School in Bremerton, and they still intend to play Archbishop.

The situation has brought up the argument about private vs. public schools, and if there is an advantage because public schools can only field athletes who legally live in their assigned district--at least according to the rules.

However, it's unlikely our state, at least in the near future, will ever place all the private schools in their own leagues with their own playoffs and championships. This was done years ago in California. But the number of private schools at or above the 2A (5-600 students or so) or 3 or 4A levels are very few...not enough to create a league without traveling halfway across the state.
