We talked with our Local Expert on computers, George Hefter of TCT Computer Solutions recently, about a BIG change coming with Microsoft programs this summer. And it's not a positive one.  As of July, updates and tech support will stop for several programs that are utilized in at least 30 million computers across the U.S. and world - most of them business related, but some in home systems as well.

You may remember last summer, when there was the widespread news that Windows XP had reached what is called "end-of-life."  Last summer, Microsoft finally stopped offering updates and tech support for one of it's best operating platforms ever made.

The bad part about "end-of-life" is that the company, Microsoft in this case, stops sending automatic updates that provide up to the minute security and performance for your operating system; and no more tech support if you have an issue.  End-of-life means you can still run that system, but it will become completely exposed to hackers and viruses, because there won't be new updates to counter the flood of viruses and attacks made on it almost daily.  It will leave you computer system virtually unprotected.

The same thing is coming this summer.  By July 2015, says George, the popular Microsoft Sever 2003, Small Business Server 2003, Outlook e-mail 2003, and Microsoft Office 2003 will also meet end-of-life.   They will still work, of course, but like Windows XP, no more updates and tech support.

You may think your virus protection, anti-malware and other shields on your computer will protect you.  Yes, they will.  Your computer.  But without regular updates, your operating system will be a "sitting duck" as George puts it.

This is significant, because George says over 30 million computers domestic and abroad still use a Windows 2003 based program, especially businesses.  The recent Premera Blue-Cross Insurance data breach is a good example.  So are the Home Depot and Target breaches.  Most of these programs using the Microsoft 2003 platforms were hacked by very clever computer thieves.  It took a lot to get through, but they did.

So imagine how easy it will be to infiltrate these Microsoft 2003 platforms after the updates and tech support stops in July?

Good advice would be to consult with George, at TCT Computer Solutions.  He will look at your system, and guide you through the process of making sure your system is safe and secure. He will also make sure your system is the proper one for your needs - especially if you're a business.  There's nothing worse than having too little - or yes, too big - a system that doesn't provide the services you want.
