An Oregon City, Oregon girl is dead after accidentally hit by a bullet fired from inside her home.

9-year-old Shayla May Shonneker was playing outside her home when a gun belonging to her mother’s boyfriend went off. The bullet traveled outside the home and hit the girl in the head.

The boyfriend, 32-year-old Joseph Wolters, had recently started a job at an armed transport company and per company requirements was practicing holstering and unholstering his weapon. As he was practicing, the gun discharged.

Clackamas County officials say she was airlifted to Oregon State University Hospital by a LifeFlight helicopter, but died upon arrival.

The accident occurred around 5 p.m. Authorities are continuing to investigate. They did not say if any charges will be filed.
