As we get set to close out another year in Newstalk 870-land,   it's interesting to hear all the different Top 10 lists that are popping up.   Some valid, some fascinating, others stupid.  But  the top ten discussed or talked about topics on Facebook?  Worth a look!

According to Facebook, and Glenn Beck's The Blaze website,   in reverse order, are the top ten things we were caught up in.  It's interesting to note the placement of some of them;  we believe certain topics were more important than others.  It's also fascinating how several of them -at least one - has virtually disappeared from the news as though it never happened.  Guess which one THAT is?  Here we go:

10 - ISIS - this is one that's not going to go away.

9 - Maylaysia Airlines - the flight that mysteriously disappeared over the ocean.  Strange, and sad that all that coverage has turned into crickets chirping.  Silence.

8 - Midterm Elections - the GOP gained big in the Senate, and some House and governors seats, but will it matter in the long run?

7 - The Conflict in Gaza - another ongoing topic that will never end

6 - World Cup - the meltdown of Brazil (giving up 7 goals to Germany in semi-final) and the epic failure of that host country was a compelling story.

5 - Michael Brown and Ferguson -  A big symptom of underlying issues in our nation

4 - Super Bowl - THE most watched television event every year. Most of the buzz was over Peyton Manning.

3 - Robin Williams - few modern entertainers or actors have had this much impact on a society

2 - Ice Bucket Challenge - while it was for a GREAT cause,  compared to some of the other stories this year, we have to ask "REALLY?"

1 - Ebola Virus Outbreak - while it still pops up in the news,  and isn't just going to disappear, it seems to have greatly diminished.

Facebook ranked these events by looking at how many times a topic was mentioned in it's social media posts, either by a post, or comments, between January and the beginning of December of this year.

In case you wondered, according to Facebook and Time Magazine, the top 10 topics for 2013 were VERY different:

1. Pope Francis
2. Election
3. Royal Baby
4. Typhoon
5. Margaret Thatcher
6. Harlem Shake
7. Miley Cyrus
8. Boston Marathon
9. Tour de France
10. Nelson Mandela
