Jonathan Winters, who for decades made Americans laugh with his over-the-top but never-demeaning comedy,  died today at age 87.

He starred or made appearances in dozens of shows from "Hee-Haw" to "Mork and Mindy" with Robin Williams. He was also a regular on Rowan and Martin's "Laugh In,"  as well as a regular guest on the "Carol Burnett Show."

Showing off his acting talents, Winters could also surprisingly play serious roles. He even appeared on several episodes of "The Twlight Zone!"

Winters was a regular on "The Tonight Show," and voiced three characters in the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoon series.

He is directly credited with inspiring Robin Williams and Jim Carey. Before Winters, nobody had ever really done improvisational stand-up comedy. Winters was known as a hilarious, unpredictable character with one of the biggest hearts in Hollywood. He will be sorely missed!
