Rescue officials are releasing a warning to remind people not too walk out on frozen pond or lake ice because it is not nearly strong enough. They warn that most ice is now only 1 to 1 1/2 inch thick and that it takes more then 4 inches of thickness before the ice is safe to walk on. They want to remind people that if you fall through the ice, it would almost certainly lead to a quick death.

The Columbia Basin Dive Director explains that "If you fall in and the current is taking you there's nothing we can do. We need people to really think about that before they step foot on the ice" according to news reports.
