Bomb Squad Called to Seattle Tunnel to Defuse Fake Light Saber

 

SEATTLE (AP) — The force wasn't strong with an abandoned homemade lightsaber that briefly shut down the Seattle downtown bus tunnel. Police say a security guard found a suspicious looking device Sunday night and called police, who shut down the tunnel while the bomb squad was called. But the device turned out to be the handle of the fictional laser-saber that Jedis use in the Star Wars universe.

Seattle Sonics Backer Vows to Continue Effort to Bring NBA to City

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — In an emotional saga that has dragged on for nearly three years, the NBA's relocation committee has voted unanimously to recommend that owners reject the application for the Sacramento Kings to move to Seattle. Even so, investor Chris Hansen pledged to "move forward with the transaction" he signed with the Maloof family to buy and move the franchise anyway. In a post on his Seattle arena website late last night, Hansen said he plans to pitch the NBA Board of Governors at its meeting next month, when league owners will vote on the issue.

Plastic Shopping Bag Ban Starts May 1 in Eugene OR

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A ban on plastic bags takes effect tomorrow in Eugene stores. The ban was approved six months ago by the city council as an environmental measure. KVAL reports shoppers can bring their own reusable bags or buy paper bags for a nickel. Thin plastic bags will still be available in Eugene grocery stores for meat and produce.

Oregon Suspect Linked to Crimes in WA and Utah

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A man wounded by a Marion County sheriff's deputy has appeared in court via jail video to hear he's facing charges that include being a felon in possession of a firearm. The 48-year-old man, Michael Kent Wylie, also is suspected of a home invasion robbery last week in Edmonds, Wash., another crime in Tigard and a parole violation in Utah. Wylie was shot in the leg Friday by a deputy who found him apparently passed out in a stolen car near Turner. The deputy fired when Wylie woke up and brandished a gun.
