The NCAA basketball tournament has always been called "March Madness," even though the Final Four and championship game are in April. If you see a lot of round 1 games with top seeds facing long shots, you'll also witness "safe" basketball that doesn't look mad at all. So why is it called March Madness? It's madness because these are single-elimination games, and for many of these players, it's the last time they'll touch a basketball competitively. For some, it's their chance to be noticed by the NBA. The frenzy comes from the one-and-done. Plus, this is amateur ball. This is kids playing for pride.
