Claiming they "Didn't know the number was private," staff members in Gov. Jay Inslee's office gave the private cell phone number of leading GOP Representative Maureen Walsh to former U.S. Rep. Gabriel Giffords. Walsh is a strong conservative, and considered a key player in the legislature. Inslee's office asked Giffords to call on state GOP leaders who were against or undecided on a bill mandating universal background checks for all gun sales. The contentious bill would severely infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of Washington gun owners.

According to documented information from KING-5 TV, a staff member gave Giffords the private cell phone number of Rep. Walsh. Drew Mikkelsen, who covers politics for KING-5 in Seattle, says Giffords called Walsh using the number and now an apology has been issued to Walsh.
