According to an audit performed by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Inspector General, nearly $200,000 worth of savings were missed by Hanford due to missed payments.

The audit says energy conservation incentive programs, which agencies are required to take advantage of,  could have provided some $190,500 in additional savings or funding.

The auditors found that number by adding up missed payments, but also found savings opportunities the auditors could not quantify, or verify.

Hanford has had a contract that allows it to participate in receive energy savings incentives, and they're allowed up to $127,500 based upon completed measures such as equipment upgrades.  Seven DOE sites were checked to see if they were utilizing the required energy savings programs.

Hanford officials say as the next two-year budget cycle begins, they are working with DOE to make sure they have the proper participation in the programs.
