A Hanford site run by LIGO has detected the existence of gravitational waves for the very first time. The gravitational waves were created by the collision of 2 different black holes scientists think collided around 1.3 billion years ago. Gravitational waves have been theory since Albert Einstein but they have never been proven until now. Understanding and being able to measure these waves will help us understand the nature of time and space and maybe help understand how the universe was even created.

LIGO has another test site in Louisiana that also had the same readings as the Hanford site. They say the second site is so data "can be compared with an identical LIGO 1,900 miles away in Louisiana. If a gravity wave passes through Earth, both LIGOs should detect it"
