It's rare to see whales in the Columbia River but one humpback ventured as far east as the Astoria Megler Bridge. Find out the crazy reason why!

Apparently El Niño has warmed the oceans off the Pacific Coast hurting anchovies -- a humpback's favorite food. So in search of cooler waters and better fish, the humpback came up the river.

I'm no marine biologist, but I've heard swimming in rivers also causes the barnacles to sluff off decreasing drag for whales, but it also makes them get tired faster. Someone who IS a marine biologist said this behavior is very rare, but we're likely to see other weird stuff during this El Niño.
