You've probably seen the videos and stories we've posted about the 'anarchistic' behavior of a number of groups of students at Portland State University, from violently disrupting Donald Trump rallies, to the school sanctioning white-bashing seminars and racist symposiums. Now, students at Whitman College have borrowed a page from that book, albeit significantly more mild.

According to the Walla Walla Union Bulletin, students staged an "oil spill" protest on the steps of Memorial Hall last Friday afternoon. A few years ago, the student body and other other school officials reportedly voted to have the school remove any fossil fuel investments or participation from the school's investment portfolio.

It's not uncommon for, especially privately run schools, to invest in certain areas to help generate funding. The vote reportedly urged the school to sell off their interests in any and all fossil fuel investing, whether it be fracking, offshore drilling, or other exploration and development around oil. This included natural gas and coal as well.

After lengthy consideration, the school's leaders opted against it, and the students protested.  wearing black clothing, they laid out on the steps of the hall, in a manner that was supposed to simulate an 'oil spill.'

While the protest was reportedly peaceful, and without incident, it's eerily similar to the fairly tame activities that began a few years ago at Portland State in Oregon.

While of course college students should be active in civic, social and political matters, often one can't help but notice with some of these students "activities" if they're really in college to learn something, or burn up tuition dollars staging rallies and protests. Just a thought.
