A man who successfully dodged flames and smoke while taking pictures of a Bonner County, Idaho brush fire was then struck and killed by a car Sunday afternoon.

This tragically ironic story happened near Sandpoint, Idaho around 2:45pm. According to Idaho State Police troopers, 46-year-old David Clark was snapping photos of a fire near Highway 2 by Sandpoint, and successfully got back to his car.

He backed onto Highway 2 and was preparing to turn into traffic to leave when he was struck by another vehicle moving at highway speed. Clark, according to the troopers, died of his injuries at the scene.

Authorities said anyone who stops alongside any highway for any reason, needs to make sure the traffic lanes are clear before re-entering the road in either direction.  Officials didn't say if smoke from the fire obscured visibility in the area, perhaps leading to the accident.
