Fortunately, it turned out not to be hazardous.

The mail room at the Two Rivers Correctional Center in Umatilla was briefly evacuated as was the administration building after a mysterious white powder was found in an envelope Monday afternoon.

Shortly before 2:30 pm, workers notified officials a white powder was found in an envelope.   All mail sent to the facility is searched and inspected prior to delivery.   After an investigation, the powder was found to be harmless, and no workers or occupants reported any ill effects.

Officials reacted with caution as there have been a number of cases across the country over the years where deadly Anthrax powder was sent in envelopes to various government and other public institutions.

Officials didn't say where the envelope may have originated from, or what the substance actually was.

The investigation continues.
