The Department of Energy is investigating a complaint filed by a whistleblower about the Hanford Vitrification, or VIT Plant.

The complaint alledges that a Hanford contractor interfered with an investigation into the design and safety of the VIT plant.   DOE sent letters to the Hanford contractors this week saying "no interferance" is acceptable, and requiring them to provide the review team with "unfettered and timely access to information and staff."

According to published reports, the DOE says contractor URS appeared to have intefered with an investigation of what is being called 'potential nuclear safety non-compliance.'   According to DOE reports and the Office of Health, Safety and Security (HSS), concerns were raised over the potential for employees to raise concerns about the plant, including technical issues, that could affect the long-term operation and safety of the VIT plant.
