Terror Behind the Screen is scary, creepy and fun.  And pretty realistic.  But if you're into REAL world terror, check out some of the most terrifying places on earth - that actually exist.

In no particular order, here's a look at some of the scariest places on the planet.

The Island of the Dolls, Xochimilio, Mexico City.   despite being a World Heritage site,  the Isla de las Munecas, or Island of the Dolls, is a morbid tourist stop.   A tiny isle hidden among many in this area known for it's canals,  the island was once the home of a man named Julian Santa Barrera.   He collected hundreds of dolls and doll parts, and hung them from trees and displayed them in bizarre poses in an effort  to ward off evil spirits.  Barrera reportedly did this after finding the body of a young girl in one of the nearby canals.  The dolls remain to this day, and good luck trying to find a tourist boat pilot who will actually drop you onto the island.

  •  Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Sicily Italy. In the late 16th . century, when a graveyard on the grounds became full,  Italian leaders excavated underground catacombs for burials.  They were divided among "religious" men,  children, even virgins - all dressed in their finest clothes.  Once word spread of how the underground climate mummified the bodies, people began to want to be buried there.  To this day, several thousand mummified skeletons stand next to each other, row after row after row.
  • The Door to Hell - Derweze, Ahal Province, Turkmenistan.  A remote desert area next to Afghanistan,  this became known as the Door to Hell because of a literal burning pit some 230 feet across.   In 1971, when Soviet scientists were searching and drilling for oil, they accidentally tapped into a huge deposit of dangerous methane gas.   The oil rig slid into the hole and exploded, causing the large pit to open.  To get rid of the gas, the scientists lit it on fire, but it didn't burn out.  The gas deposit is so large, this circular pit has been "on fire" continuously for the last 40 years!

  • Snake Island, Sao Paolo, Brazil.   This island is 90 miles off the coast of Sao Paolo,  Ilha De Queimada Grande (Snake Island) is home to at least one deadly snake per every 1-5 meters!  Already known as the home of the deadly lancehead genus snake,  thousands of years ago the island was cut off from the mainland when sea levels rose, and over time, to survive, the snakes have evolved.  Because there's no land-level prey to eat, they've learned to climb trees and strike at birds (or people!) from the air. And their venom has evolved into a toxin five times stronger than those snakes on the mainland - it can instantly kill any creature, and melts human flesh.   Brazilian authorities strongly discourage any tourists from visiting this place, but some scientists still do.
