If you tether your dog in the backyard, you better familiarize yourself with new laws passed in Washington state.
They're pretty common-sense: make sure your dog has enough room to move around. Make sure it has proper food, water and protection from the elements. Make sure any enclosures are sanitary and comfortable.
Doesn't sound like new, does it? That's because the law previously encouraged animal control officers to issue warnings, and reminders and exercise patience.
The new rules do not issue specific punishments for bad behavior, but do give animal control officers more freedom to handle specific situations as they see fit.
That means if an officer doesn't like what he or she sees, they now have more flexibility to take action.
That's good news for pets. That's good news for the community.
