Before you get too excited about the Oregon State Senate signing off an finally approving self-pumping gas stations, there's a catch.   Actually lots of them.

Back in the days when we weren't in such a hurry to get somewhere,  we used to welcome the gas station attendant who not only pumped our fuel, but washed the windows, checked the tires etc before we went on our way.

Oregon is about to become one of the last states to finally allow motorists to pump their own gas, but it won't be widespread.

Self-serve gas stations will be allowed but only in counties with less than 40,000.  Not cities, counties.  And, the gas can only be pumped by motorists from 6pm to 6am.  The measure is largely being done to help businesses in rural cities and towns that cannot afford to stay open all night, like convenience stores.

Rural stations which are unattended at night will be able to sell gas, and compete with manned fuel outfits. The bill has already passed the Oregon house, and the governor is expected to sign it shortly.

New Jersey is the only other state that doesn't allow motorists to pump their own gas.
