Quarterbacks could rewrite the record books in Week 7 of the NFL season. Here's a preview of this week's most interesting storylines:

Does Geno Smith Know How To Butt Fumble?

A potential AFC East showdown before the season, the Jets-Patriots game in Foxborough, Mass. on Thursday could be a literal mess. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected as New England (4-2) looks to bury New York (1-5) even further in the division's cellar.

The last time these teams met for a Thursday night game (in 2012), sloppy weather and sloppier play by then-Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez produced the infamous "Butt Fumble" and a big Patriots' win. Current New York QB Geno Smith has played terribly in nice weather this season, so inclement conditions could guarantee his place in infamy (and Michael Vick's move into the lineup).

Division Leaders Battle In Indy

The Bengals and Colts are quietly shaping into legitimate AFC title contenders. Each team has played well enough to lead its respective division after six weeks. If not for Mike Nugent's faulty leg — and a defense that was scorched by Cam Newton's arm and legs — Cincinnati (3-1-1) would have as many wins as Indianapolis (4-2).

Colts owner Jim Irsay returns from his six-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy after pleading guilty to one misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated last spring. While Irsay won't help the Indy defense stop Cincy QB Andy Dalton, the team could receive an emotional boost from his presence — or they could get clobbered by a fired-up Bengals attack.

Philip Rivers Is Historically Good Right Now

Irritating as he can sometimes be, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is also an excellent passer. Last week against the Raiders, Rivers became the first NFL QB to earn a passer rating of 120 or better in five straight games. That makes San Diego (5-1) the favorite over Kansas City (2-3), a team that could already be looking at must-win games. The Chargers are making it their mission to show how good they are.

Chiefs fans may find some confidence in the way Raiders' rookie QB Derek Carr torched the Chargers' secondary for four touchdowns (and the fact that their baseball Royals are nearing a World Series berth). Doesn't seem that promising, does it?

How Many Yards Will DeMarco Murray Roll Up On The Giants?

The New York Giants (3-3) looked absolutely awful while getting shut out, 27-0, by the Eagles last week. One of the worst parts of the team's performance was the 203 yards rushing its defense allowed — the most since 2012. Worse news: Cowboys' running back DeMarco Murray, aka the NFL's leading rusher, lines up to run at the not-so Big Blue defense this week.

Dallas (5-1) is on an absolute high, having won five games in a row and establishing itself as an early Super Bowl contender. The Cowboys can take another big step — and crush a division rival — with a win at home on Sunday.

Peyton Manning Can Break Brett Favre's Record For Career TD Passes

When his playing career is over, Broncos' quarterback Peyton Manning will hold many NFL records (and that's not even counting the ones for helmet size). This Sunday night, Manning could eclipse Brett Favre's NFL record for career touchdown passes when he leads Denver (4-1) against San Francisco (4-2).

Heading (sorry) into the game, Manning has 506 TD passes, just two behind Favre's 508. The 49ers defense figures to try to prevent history from happening to them. What San Francisco really needs is for its offense to control the ball against the Broncos' defense and keep Manning on the sidelines.
