Murder Charges Delayed in Death of Kennewick Toddler Dec. 23

23-year-old Nicole Bernal of Kennewick brought her two-year-old son to Trios Health Emergency Center on Dec. 23, 2014. He was unresponsive and pronounced brain dead.

Bernal's boyfriend has been arrested for alleged witness tampering, but additional information could be weeks away.

Back in December, the child was airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane and declared dead.

A Dec. 29 autopsy was performed by a forensic pathologist in the Spokane County Medical Examiner's office. The findings are not yet complete. The boyfriend is 32-year-old Mario Torres of Kennewick.

Police spokesman Sgt. Ken Lattin says it could be up to six weeks for more significant information to become available.
