A state park popular in spring and summer will be closed until further notice.

Because of extremely low water levels behind Wanapum Dam,  Wanapum Dam State Park has been closed, according to the Grant County PUD and the Washington State Parks Commission.

Because of cracks found in the dam earlier this spring, and necessary repairs, the  park and beaches have been closed.  According to officials, the water levels are so low the shorelines have exposed possibly sensitive environmental areas, and could be hazardous to visitors.   The low water levels have exposed areas that could create treacherous footing and unstable areas for foot and or boat traffic.

Water levels have not been this low in decades.   Visitors who had reserved camping spots for spring and summer are being notified by the Park Service, and camping fees are being refunded.
