Vox.com is not a hugely well known website, but growing respect in political circles for digging into stories and providing views not always known, as well as facts not always reported by the mainstream media.  Here's some theories as to why John Boehner has decided to resign as House Speaker.

Here are some of the reasons:

  • Pro-life activists have stepped up pressure for Boehner to lead  the fight to defund Planned Parenthood, especially after the shocking videos claiming they illegally sold aborted fetal body parts. Boehner supported the theory, but feared a government shutdown would be a political disaster. He is now being blamed for not doing that.
  • He has become despised by conservative activists, and a growing number of conservative voters, being viewed as a sell-out to Obama when it comes to fiscal policies. He was roasted over the debt ceiling sequester, and accused of blinking in several games of "chicken" with the president over the shutdowns of 2011 and 2013.
  • He has been viewed as ineffective and essentially powerless, despite the GOP Majority in the House. Many critics say a more confrontational Speaker could have caused Obama to back down on issues, especially if that person were to articulate the reasons for sticking to conservative values.

Vox says now perhaps the GOP will have a chance to elect a Speaker who is willing to go toe-to-toe with the President, many critics think such a strategy could work.  Especially if the Speaker plays it will well to conservative voters and others.
