Richland fire and police crews were working this morning to rescue a boy who was trapped in a bizarre accident.

Crews responded before 9am to the 1000 block of Allenwhite Drive in Richland, where an SUV had slid off an icy driveway and trapped an 8-year-old boy underneath. His mother told our news partner KNDU-TV that she was able to talk to him as crews worked to free him, and he seemed ok,  obviously other than being very scared.

Richland fire crews now say the boy is free, has been transported to a local hospital with some leg injuries and suffering from cold-exposure, but is said to be in stable condition.

The neighborhood has some very steep hills and driveways. How or why the SUV slid is not yet known. We will continue to update as more information becomes available.

The ice storm and freezing rain cancelled all area schools, and I-82 from Selah to south of Tri-Cities by the Oregon border was closed early Wednesday due to slick hazardous conditions and accidents.
