Dr. Alex Ortolano, who operates Arbor Healthcare for Women in Richland, has had his license 'restricted' by the Washington State Department of Health's Medical Qualify Assurance Commission.

The ruling by the Commission allows Ortolano to continue to practice, but certain conditions must be met. According to the Commission:

"Ortolano will remain under the oversight of the Medical Commission for four years. He is allowed to practice under certain conditions, including use of a preceptor, a requirement of second opinions for all surgeries, and limitations on delivering babies and certain medical procedures."

He came under scrutiny of the Commission after allegations were brought that he performed too many births, often nearly double-booking procedures, for financial gain. He was also accused of performing unnecessary procedures the resulted in several patients experiencing complications. A total of 17 patients had issues that resulted in the investigation. Most of the allegations occurred between 2011 and 2013.

He was also accused of performing substandard work in several cases, due to overbooking and too great a case load.  He will be under the supervision for four years.
