A special walk to call attention to the issue of suicide is coming later this month, and the public is invited to participate.

The Benton Franklin Suicide Prevention Coalition  (BFSPC) and the Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP) will be holding a walk that will begin at the Outback Steakhouse on Canal Drive 10:30am.

According to the Washington State Department of Health,  between 2007 and 2011 there were 566 completed suicides in the age group 10-24 in our state. That's an increase of 5.5% over the previous five years.

Surveys done with 8th, 10th and 12th graders in our state show at least 8.8% have tried to commit suicide, and a surprising 13.8% have seriously considered it in the last year.

Donations will be accepted at the event, and the first 100 participants will receive a certificate for a free Bloomin' Onion from Outback.   For more information about this event,  you may email Kristi Hayes of the YSPP at Kristi@yspp.org.
