According to the latest data released by the Washington state Department of Health,  about three people commit suicide in our state each day.

According to a release from the Department this week:

"Suicide is Washington’s eighth leading cause of death – second in the 15-24-year-old age group. The state ranks 21st nationally in suicides. Thousands of other Washington residents are hospitalized each year after trying to hurt themselves."  (bold lettering added for emphasis).

National Suicide Prevention Week is this week, through September 14th, and officials urge people to be on the lookout for the tell-tale signs someone they know might be considering suicide.   According to the Department:

"It’s important to pay attention when people talk about feeling trapped, or about being a burden to others. Indicators may include increasing alcohol or drug use, acting anxious or agitated, behaving recklessly, sleeping too little or too much, withdrawing or feeling isolated, showing rage or talking about seeking revenge, and displaying extreme mood swings."

Talking about suicide with someone does NOT increase their chances of doing it, according to the DOH.   In fact,  many suicides are prevented because people became involved with loved ones or others they know.    So, officials say pay close attention and don't be afraid to ask questions and get involved if someone you know exhibits signs they might be considering suicide.
