A man fatally shot himself during a traffic stop on I-82 east between Granger and Sunnyside Sunday afternoon.

About 2:30 p.m. a WSP trooper pulled over the man for a seat belt infraction.

The suspect proceeded to get out of his vehicle with a gun in his hand. Refusing the trooper order to drop the weapon, he then walked in front of his car and shot himself.

WSP spokesman, Sergeant Trevor Herrud said, "He didn't say a word, he just finished it...the trooper who pulled him over called for aid. Emergency Medical Services showed up but unfortunately there was no chance to save the man’s life.”

The trooper who pulled the man over was unharmed and there were no passengers with the driver. A car model was not given, but the vehicle did have an Idaho license plate.

Washington State Patrol, State Patrol detectives and the Yakima County Sheriff's office are investigating the incident.
