Joint Base McChord-Lewis could be the destination point for some of the tens of thousands of parentless children who are coming over the border.

According to the website SFGate.com,  negotiations are under way to temporarily house children from Central America being detained at the border.  According to the site:

“Negotiations are underway between the Defense Department and the Department of Health and Human Services, said a spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. Denny Heck of Olympia, whose district includes the base…”

The report also went on to say:

“A decision on using the base could be made this week. There’s no word yet on how many children could be moved and when it might take place.”

Officials say the plan would not affect the day-to-day operations of the facility, which is now the combination of the old Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force base near Tacoma.

The children would be housed in old ROTC barracks that were formerly used by a unit for exercises until that unit was permanently moved to Kentucky earlier this year.
