Amy Winehouse

Maybe you were not familiar with Amy Winehouse’s music (she only won FIVE Grammy award for her 2006 release Back to Black and was accalimed  to be one of the most talented but self-destructive artists of a generation), but you probably saw at least one her meltdowns….

Winehouse, the beehive haired dark eyed tart tongued lady was found dead saturday in her London apartment.  She was also known for her classic sailor tattoos.   After growing up showing extensive musical ability, then a career lull, she exploded onto the music scene with Back to Black, which mixed hip hop, soul, doo-wop and 60′s girl groups into an irresistable mix.   But the fame consumed her…her death culminates a long slide into drug and alchohol issues; she cancelled her latest European tour after slurring and stammering thru several songs during a show in Belgrade.  She was also rather acid in her comments about fellow pop musicians, saying things that many people thought but would never utter.   Sadly, despite her behavior and substance issues, no one could deny her voice was stunning, and her musical ability astounding.  But as she once told the AP shortly after winning her Grammys, “I didn’t go out looking to be famous.”…and obviously fame is what helped destroy and kill her.  Winehouse was 27.  If you were not familiar with her, think Lady Gaga with more suave,  brains, and a hell of a lot more talent, minus the rediculous contrived getups and political issues.
