Benton County Sheriff's officials say a toddler has died after falling into the Yakima River Monday afternoon.

According to Sheriff Jerry Hatcher, the child's father was taking a nap with two small children, ages 2 and 3, around 12:30pm. They live in a trailer near Benton City.

Then apparently the two children awoke and wandered off. The 3-year-old was located safely, but the 2-year old was missing. According to KEPR-TV, the man thought he had secured a door so the boys couldn't get out of their trailer near Benton City, but he was awakened by his daughter around 3:30pm. She said the boys were missing.

The 2-year-old was found in the Yakima River by the family after they and authorities searched the surrounding area. He was rushed to Kadlec Medical Center, but died later in the evening around 6pm.

The investigation continues.
