New Year's Day night was busy for some Toppenish police officers, who found themselves pursuing a man who'd stolen a vehicle out of Pendleton.

Patrol Officer Briggs was parked at the Autozone store finishing up some paperwork around 11:30pm when he saw a sedan blow through a red light at the intersection of West First and South Elm Streets, one of the city's busiest intersections.

The driver failed to stop, as Briggs gave pursuit. along with 3 other officers. The chase led them across town, with the driver actually getting airborne over an embankment. The driver finally stopped behind the Toppenish School District buildings where he was apprehended.

Police say the driver was 28-year-old Cyrus Andrew Sampson, an enrolled Umatilla Native American from Pendleton. The car he was driving had been reported stolen earlier. He's now facing felony auto theft and eluding charges. This is from one of the officer's dash cams.
