When I lived in Alaska everyone had studded tires and when the temperature never gets above freezing all winter long and the road stays white with frozen snow, they are a huge benefit. But honestly, in a place like the Tri-Cities, where they're great on a few icy mornings and that's it... I don't think it's worth the noise or the ripping up of the road to get studded tires.

There are great non-studded snow tires out there like Bridgestone Blizzak and my favorite, Michelin, that do very well on snow and ice.

However, that said, my wife did slide into a curb at the roundabout by the mall last winter and easily cost me the price of a set of studded snow tires. Hmm.

Just as an aside, not because I'm supposed to, allow me to mention that my best experience in the Tri-Cities has been with Tire Factory (if you need a place).
