According to Douglas County, OR District Attorney Rick Wesenberg, two Roseburg detectives hit 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer.

Wesenberg said Wednesday Detective Sgt. Joe Kaney and Detective Todd Spingath were in civilian clothes and not wearing body armor when they engaged Harper-Mercer as he walked out of Snyder Hall. That's were a number of students and teachers were shot or wounded during the gunman's assault.

The two officers were about 15 yards away from the gunman when they noticed bullets whistling past them. They returned fire, hitting Mercer in the side, badly wounding him. He apparently staggered back into Snyder Hall where he fatally shot himself.

He shot himself in the head.  Authorities say Kaney and Spingath are "heroes," as they prevented any further loss of life on the Umpqua Campus.

Additional information is expected to be released this week and down the road.
