Gov. Inslee signed a quickly-moved legislative bill Wednesday that distinguishes the difference between legal marijuana and industrial hemp.

Prosecutors and workers at the Washington State Crime Lab noticed a little-known provision in the bill that legalized marijuana that could have provided a loophole for criminals.

The provision centered around the difference between marijuana and industrial hemp used to make rope. To protect hemp, the law defined marijuana as possessing a certain amount of the chemical that gets people high.

Unfortunately, some forms of marijuana may fall under that threshold, making prosecution for the illegal growing, selling or carrying of it difficult. The new measure will more clearly define the difference between the two, allowing prosecutors to pursue marijuana related violations and crimes. Supporters of the marijuana legalization bill also supported this new revision.
