A team based at Harvard University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have created a way to use 3D printing to create microbatteries that could supply electricity to tiny devices in the medical and communication fields.

The technology has been around for decades, but we are just starting to see some of the incredible capabilities of 3D printing. Using digital models, a 3D printer can create a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape. This technology is often used for prototyping ideas and designs and creates tangible objects used in the automotive, aerospace, dental and medical industries.

There have been numerous advances in miniature devices, but the batteries that are needed to power these objects are often the same size or even larger than the actual devices itself. Obviously defeating the purpose of creating the small devices.

Scientists realized they could pack more energy if they could .

The team created a specially formulated “ink” that is deposited through a fine nozzle, similar to a tube of tooth paste. As it is distributed the ink immediatley hardens creating stacks of tightly interlaced, ultrathin electrodes and containing compounds to give it electrochemical properties. What they created are the first micro-batteries that are comparable to commercial batteries, but on a much smaller scale.

Nabisco has decided to unleash Watermelon Oreos onto the public for a limited time. The cookies are yellow on the outside with a creamy pink-and-green center to give you the feeling of eating watermelon, without the hassle of spitting out any seeds.

You can only find the cookies at Target, where they run about $3 per box.

Oreos have a long history of experimental flavors, including strawberry milkshake, gingerbread, lemon twist, birthday cake and candy corn. So, when’s the bacon flavor coming?

If you’re not sure you want to give the watermelon flavor a try, check out the review below to help you decide.

On June 21 Springleaf Financial presents Zac Grooms, Cody Christopherson, Nolan Hare, Al Hare and Joe Smart as Brewer’s Grade at Friday Fix. Brewer’s Grade is an original, contemporary, diverse and entertaining country band with years of playing together under their belt.
Zac Groom (vocals, guitar):
Writing and performing country music in the Northwest as a solo artist and band frontman for over 15 years, Zac has had a hand in writing nearly 40 songs including, “If I Had My Way” which went all the way to No. 1 on the Independent charts in 1999. Since recording his first single at age 14, Zac has won several awards, shared the stage with various country legends, and appeared on numerous radio shows. He continues to be highly recognized in the Columbia River Gorge music community.
Cody Christopherson (drums, guitar, bass guitar):
Playing since age 13, Cody cofounded the band “Unwound” with Zac Grooms in high school. He continued to play drums and develop the band for more than 10 years. Through arrangement and recording, booking and promotions, Cody’s style and attitude has been an important component in the formation of the band’s identity. After a brief hiatus, Cody has returned to the lineup.
Alan Hare (guitar):
Born and raised in The Dalles, Oregon, he began playing guitar at age 15. Al spent years mastering his craft in a diverse collection of styles including Van Halan and Stevie Ray Vaughn, Brent Mason and Vince Gill. Playing music throughout the gorge area during the 1990s and 2000s, Al became a well respected multi-genre guitarist. In 2004, Al joined the band and has since been a driving force in local music. Al plays a Valley Arts, Brent Mason Signature Guitar through Fender or Mesa Boogie Amps.
Nolan Hare (bass guitar):
He first took the stage in his early school days. Growing up in a home where it wasn’t uncommon to hear Metallica, James Taylor, Chopin, Eric Clapton, Easy-E, and Garth Brooks throughout the course of a day, Nolan developed an appreciation for all styles. Since joining the band in 2008 he has contributed more than just his musical talents. With a background in live radio, event production, and web development, he has successfully maintained the band’s professional image keeping them on par with larger touring acts.
Joe Smart (banjo, guitar, strings):
An award winning multi-instrumentalist, studio musician, and producer, Joe has been performing music since the age of eight. He joined the band in 2011. Joe began on the guitar, moving on to the fiddle, mandolin, and recently taking up the banjo and resonator guitar. With influences from Bach to Van Halen, his musical style has been molded into a diverse amalgam of folk, blues, rock, jazz and classical. In 2007 he released his debut solo instrumental album “Guitarman.”

Car designers are hard at work coming up with some incredible, futuristic-looking automotive designs, some of which may be racing down your street in the years ahead.

Sports cars and spacecraft-like models tend to dominate the imaginations of the engineering students and designers envisioning our near and distant futures. Even so, we’d like to start this list off with a family car—kind of, sort of—before we jump into some of the wilder concept cars you may see in the not-so-distant future.

1. Chevrolet Stingray AeroWagon

The Chevrolet Stingray AeroWagon, which is based on the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, just might be put into production by Callaway Cars, if enough orders are received. This incredibly sexy “family” car will have a rear hatch—just like any other station wagon—except the hatch will be made out of carbon-fiber. The car itself will be capable of reaching 200 mph, although it will still be rather economical (for a Corvette) when it comes to gas mileage. This definitely isn’t your mother’s station wagon.

2. BMW ZX-6

We might as well rocket into the future with our next entry. The BMW ZX-6 doesn’t even look like a car, at least not like anything you’ve seen outside of science-fiction movies. This “space car” is the brainchild of design students at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Turin, Italy, who worked in conjunction with BMW. The streamlined body, hidden wheels and driver’s-side and passenger seats integrated into the car’s body all make the BMW ZX-6 a daring concept vehicle. We’re sure many a future-minded car enthusiast is praying that this BMW will make it off the ground.

3. Lamborghini’s Egoista

Lamborghini makes sleek, extremely expensive, high-performance sports cars, but the Egoista is something above and beyond what Lamborghini already has on offer. This concept car—which has only a single seat—is part-racing machine, part-designer’s unadulterated dream, part-neon rocket ship and part-personal statement for a rich owner who really wants to be noticed when he or she takes it out for a drive.

4. Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept

The Mercedes-Benz BIOME concept car is a vehicle that could one day be grown in a lab, rather than manufactured on an assembly line or in a high-tech workshop. It’s an organic, hybrid vehicle that, while not actually grown from seeds (at least not yet), could very well incorporate “grown” and “nurtured” components (bio-fiber) into its overall design. Is this car truly possible in the real world? Time, and the advance of technology, will tell.

5. 2025 Bugatti Aerolithe Concept

This Bugatti concept vehicle is a contemporary version of the original Aerolithe, which was first given its public debut decades ago. This modern take on a classic design is similar in appearance to the pre-Christopher Nolan-era Batmobile driven by the likes of Michael Keaton and George Clooney. The car’s flowing lines and aeronautical exterior might be a signal of the types of cars we can expect to drive in the future—assuming, of course, we can afford these pieces of high-tech motorized art.

A rare Janus, or two-faced cat, was recently been born in Amity, Oregon. The kitten, named Deucy, had two faces but only one set of internal organs. Owner Stephanie Durkee took the animal to the vet, who found the kitten to be in perfect health.

Experts say these rare cats don’t usually live to adulthood; the vet who examined Deucy said he’s only known of four or five of them who made it that far, the oldest living to 12 years old.

Deucy apparently experienced complications, and according to KGW-TV in Portland, died early Thursday. The vet who cared for the extremely rare cat was not surprised, as very few of the animals ever make it to adulthood. Deucy’s chances had been deemed good, as she initially appeared to be in very good health.

A porcupine was holding up foot traffic on the Leslie Grove Park Trail in Richland this morning around 7 a.m. It appeared to be ill since 1) it wasn’t scared of all the joggers and 2) it kept going around and around in a circle. Several calls to animal control at the city, state and federal level were unsuccessful in determining the fate of the poor animal.
In the last few weeks we’ve seen a bear in Benton City, a moose in Connell and now a porcupine in Richland!

American Daredevils will be seen starting in September on The History Channel!

A stunt performer who has blown himself up and jumped a school bus at the Hermiston Super Oval is coming to The History Channel this fall.

Mike Buse, known as Mr. Dizzy, has been setting numerous world records for stunt performances in categories nobody else has been willing to try. It’s one thing to jump a motorcycle over school buses, Buse jumps the school bus!

He has jumped school buses, limos… and rumors are he is considering a dump truck.

Mr. Dizzy has performed three times over the last two seasons at Hermiston Super Oval, most recently a few weeks ago when he blew himself and his assistant up in a minivan full of gunpowder and racing fuel! Last season he jumped a school bus over a row of old RV campers at the track with “demolishing” and debris-scattering results!

Buse got the attention of The History Channel a few years ago and was featured on a show called Wreckreaction Nation where he set a world record for jumping a limousine over 107 feet. The same producer who created Deadliest Catch is producing the show, and 16 episodes have been purchased and scheduled. Buse got his start racing at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe and now travels the country with The Crusher (Josh Beckel) and Corey “The Headache” Howell — his stunt sidekicks.

The Crusher was inside the mini-van with Buse when they detonated themselves earlier this season in Hermiston. He is set to return later this summer for more stunts at the racetrack!

Look for American Daredevils this fall on The History Channel. Here is what it looked like from the tower at Hermiston Super Oval when Mr. Dizzy set it off!

There are all kinds of strange eateries out there, ranging from opera-themed bistros to cafes swarming with cats, as well as diners built inside of the fuselages of old airplanes. While we understand that some people just want a simple, peaceful meal when they head out, others like a little something extra special.

The next time you find yourself in Italy, the Maldives or perhaps Japan, rather than settling for the same old local fare, why not try a meal in an underwater restaurant or an active prison instead? Here’s a list of five bizarre global restaurants that just might make you scratch your head and wonder, Who on Earth could have thought of something as strange as that?

1. Maldives Underwater Restaurant

If you want to dine underwater, you don’t have to look any further than the Hilton Hotel in Rangalifinolhu, Maldives—although the middle of the Indian Ocean is pretty far to look for most of us. The hotel’s small restaurant (see above) is five meters below the water. The structure is sheathed in a see-through acrylic covering, which allows you to watch all of the colorful aquatic creatures swim by while you’re enjoying your lunch or supper.

2. Roller Coaster Restaurant

Who wouldn’t want their meals delivered to them by a mini roller coaster? You can experience just that at the roller coaster restaurant in Nuremburg, Germany, called ‘S Baggers. You order your food on a touchscreen, and once it’s been prepared, it will be delivered to you via twisting metal tracks suspended over your head and reaching down to your table. Could this be the future of self-service dining? Regardless, it’s a very entertaining way to order from a menu.

3. Fortezza Medicea Prison Restaurant

The Fortezza Medicea Prison Restaurant in Italy is not a prison-themed restaurant; it’s a real-life prison open to the public for fancy meals. If you choose to dine here, you’ll be served food prepared by criminals and brought to your table by hardened felons, many of whom are serving life sentences. You’ll be treated to great Italian meals dished out by actual killers, all working under the watchful eyes of armed guards.

4. Dubai’s Ice Restaurant and Bar

Dubai, located in the United Arab Emirates, isn’t famous for its cold weather. But that can all change if you happen upon Dubai’s Ice Restaurant and Bar. Almost all of the furniture and decor are carved out of ice. You’ll have to wear a thick jacket with a hood if you come here for a drink—which you can sip out of ice cups—or grab a bite to eat. The food, of course, will be served to you on ice plates. This is a great place to get away from Dubai’s excessive heat.

5. Dinner in the Sky

For those gastronomes who aren’t afraid of heights, they might want to think about booking a table at Dinner in the Sky. The concept behind this restaurant is quite simple, if adventurous: the staff straps the guests into chairs, and a giant crane hoists them and their rectangular table up into the sky. The waiters and the patrons work and eat, respectively, while the rest of the world rushes by—many, many stories below.

WonderLabScience, Wiki Commons

Cats and dogs, while extremely lovable, are not the only choices out there when it comes to selecting a household pet. There are quite a few unusual animals in existence that actually make good, even great companions for their human owners. We’re not talking man-eating tigers or wild boars here—there are some limits to just how exotic you should go.

The advantages of getting an unusual pet are many. These quirky creatures make for interesting conversation starters and can be used as educational tools for kids. Some exotic pets can give you tons of affections, loads of fun and years of companionship. Just remember that you need to avoid any endangered or truly wild animals, and make sure you know what you’re getting into as far as general upkeep is concerned.

For example, if you live in a Manhattan apartment, you might want to think twice about getting a miniature donkey (they need a good amount of space), but a potbellied pig should do just fine. Here are five exotic pets that will give you a few ideas about what’s out there.

1. Bearded Dragons

Bearded dragons (see above) are lizards that are quite playful and full of character. If you’ve ever wanted a social pet that isn’t a mammal, the bearded dragon just might be for you. Bearded dragons are pretty simple to care for, once you learn a few basic tricks. They eat vegetables and insects, are able to be handled often, and can live as long as 10 years. These durable reptiles get their name from the prickly skin under their throats, which billows up and resembles a man’s beard. How cool would it be to tell your friends that you have to head home in order to “feed your dragon”?

2. Potbellied Pig

Brian Robert Marshall / Wikimedia Commons

Potbellied pigs have a lot of charisma. Their diminutive size makes them a heck of a lot easier to manage as pets than massive farm pigs. Potbellied pigs are smart and easily trainable, although like some dog breeds, they can be, well, a bit pig-headed at times.

As long as you show them that you’re the dominant species in the house, they should learn to behave like little ladies and gentlemen, and give you very little trouble at all. These small pigs are sensitive to your emotions, and are quite emotionally sensitive themselves. If you want an animal that’s full of love (and can be potty trained), a potbellied pig could be a great way to go.

3. Hissing Cockroach

While a giant hissing cockroach might not be the kind of creature you can cuddle up with on the sofa, they still make for incredibly interesting pets. These large and colorful natives of Madagascar are very easy to care for. You can keep them in a small terrarium, or a large plastic container. They eat dry dog food, fruit, orange peels and decaying animal matter. The more cockroaches you choose to keep (they do breed like cockroaches), the greater the chance is that you’ll be treated to a hissing “symphony.” These huge insects love to hiss when they’re mating, or just feeling really good.

4. Bengal Cat

V. Sauvaget / Wikimedia Commons

No, a Bengal cat is not a Bengal tiger, just in case you were wondering. Bengal cats are a cross between your typical housecat and a leopard. (Yes, a leopard.) This unusual mix results in a very exotic and wild-looking cat.

As a rule, these little beasts act pretty much like any other domesticated cat, as long as they’re three or four generations removed from the original pairing with the leopard.

Bengal cats are full of pep and personality, and they make wonderful pets for people who already have some experience raising and taking care of stubborn cats.

5. Miniature Donkey

Just because the word “miniature” is in the name of the miniature donkey, don’t think you can keep one these charming and affectionate animals in a small space. At the very least, you’ll need a good-sized backyard, if not a large garden or small farm. Children love these gentle animals (they’re a bit like Donkey in ‘Shrek’), but they do require some attention.

Land for grazing, hay, fresh water and protective shelter number among the most important things a miniature donkey should have for a good life—that, and lots of love. If you take care of the basics with these curious animals, you’ll get a lot of affection, and a delightful pet in return, plus a playmate that doesn’t mind towing your kids around in a small cart or red wagon.

For a country as obsessed with weight and food production as ours is, there tends to be a lot of conflicting information, health-food fads and dietary gimmicks circulating about what and how we should eat.

While there are plenty of great choices on the market today when it comes to eating right, quite a few others are confusing or downright misleading. Foods that conventional wisdom once said were healthy might not be as beneficial for you as you thought. Sometimes it depends on how the item is produced, how much of it you consume, or how you prepare it. Regardless, here are five “health” foods you might want to take another look at, because they’re not necessarily what they seem:

1. Granola

The word “granola” just sounds healthy, doesn’t it? We eat it for breakfast, put it into our trail mix, and make packaged bars out of the stuff. Well, it turns out that granola can often be loaded up with added fat and sugar, which help transform plain oats into tasty granola in the first place. Since granola is usually full of sugar, but absent healthy fiber, eating these crunchy nuggets for breakfast probably isn’t the best way to start you day. If you simply love the stuff, make sure you check the labels of your favorite brands before buying them, and compare the sugar and fiber contents.

2. Fruit Juices

Many of the commercially available fruit juices, especially orange juice, as well as the fruit smoothies you like to buy at your favorite coffee or juice franchise, are frequently packed with sugar. We mean it—tons and tons of sugar. Well, not literally “tons” per serving, but enough sugar to rival three or four donuts, an ice-cream bar, or a large bottle of soda. Fruit, which is full of fiber, is great for your body. Processed fruit juices are not. So reach for a real apple or an orange instead of that picture of an orange you see on a juice carton. Your body (particularly your waistline) will thank you for it.

3. Reduced-Fat Peanut Butter

Reduced fat is a good thing, right? Often, that really is the case, but not when it comes to reduced-fat peanut butter. Regular peanut butter, and its reduced-fat cousin, are usually pretty evenly matched when it comes to caloric content, but reduced-fat peanut butter tends to amp up the sugar content while reducing the amount of beneficial monounsaturated fats. Remember, not all fat is bad, so when you’re deciding on a peanut butter, don’t feel guilty at all. Go for the natural, real deal, and try and avoid the reduced-fat options.

4. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil for Cooking

Olive oil has tons of health benefits (blood pressure, heart, skin, etc.), but when used for cooking, it can be a little problematic. For quick and light stir-fries, and other cooking uses that don’t take a lot of time or excessive heat, extra-virgin olive oil will do just fine. Trouble brews when you try to fry something large—or, heaven forbid, deep-fry it—in olive oil.

At certain heat levels the oil will burn and turn rancid, releasing free radicals—which are carcinogens—into your body. Raw olive oil is great, but if you need a lot of oil for a certain recipe, use a different kind of cooking oil with a higher “smoking” point, like canola, peanut or safflower oil. Save the extra-virgin olive oil for dousing on salads and pasta after the food has been prepared or cooked.

5. Margarine

Maybe you can’t believe it’s not butter, but that doesn’t really matter, because margarine isn’t nearly as good for you as you once thought. Natural butter is actually much better for your body than margarine. A lot of margarines (not all) are full of vegetable oils and harmful trans fats. These polyunsaturated fats can lead to an increased risk of heart attack, especially in men. If you can get your hands on good old-fashioned butter, produced from milk that comes from grass-fed cows, you’ll probably be better off than having to sort through all of the contradictory information out there about margarine and other artificial spreads.

Who says there’s nothing good to watch on TV?

While doing a report on a 73-year-old man with dementia who went missing from his home in Limington, Maine, a news crew found the man in question.

Robert McDonough had been missing for about 14 hours when reporter Norm Krakos did a live segment. A few minutes later, a man wandered over to the crew and identified himself as McDonough. The crew immediately called authorities and verified it was indeed McDonough in what has turned out to be the latest unlikely feel-good story to occur while cameras rolled.

Let’s hope McDonough remains safe and sound.

Source: Missing Man With Dementia Miraculously Turns Up During News Report

We’re not positive, but ticketing a cyclist should probably go under the NYPD’s list of “Things That Are A Waste of Time.”

In this hysterical video, which shows NYC cyclist and filmmaker Casey Neistat first getting a $50 ticket for not riding in the bike lane and then proving that the lane is not always the safest one to be in, is quickly becoming our favorite video. Maybe it’s because the guy has the gall to take all of those nasty falls, or perhaps it’s just because we love watching cops get owned on camera, but this one is definitely a win for us.

A bridge collapse in Mount Vernon, Washington on Thursday miraculously resulted in no fatalities.

The Interstate-5 Bridge went tumbling in the Skagit River below, causing three people to spill into the water and go to the hospital.

Dan Sligh was in his car with his wife when the bridge came tumbling down. He explained what happened:

We started slowing down, and about that same time another semi-truck came up on the left side. It almost looked like he pinned that truck over to where he couldn’t swerve. He hit the bridge about three or four feet wider than the actual bridge was, and there was a big puff of dust. I hit the brakes, (but with) the weight of the trailer and everything else we went right off the bridge as it collapsed into the Skagit River.”

Sligh and his wife, along with another man, all went into the water and were rescued. They were brought to a hospital and are listed as being in stable condition.

Things could’ve been much worse, considering the water was 46 degrees and 18 feet deep.

The I-5 Bridge was built in 1955 and inspected twice last year. There is no estimate for when it may re-open to traffic.

After the collapse, a crowd of about 2,000 curious onlookers emerged on the scene and took photos, several of which went viral.
