Federal Justice Department officials won't comment on the issue, but it's created a cloud of mystery.

According to multiple sources, including Fox News,  Washington State Auditor Troy Kelley is turning documents over to the U.S. Department of Justice.  What they are, nobody will say.

Tacoma police reported U.S. Treasury Department agents spent about "five hours" earlier this week searching Kelley's home while he was away on vacation.  Kelley, who was reached for comment and issued a statement saying he had no knowledge of any investigation.

And to make matters more murky,  officials with the Justice Department will neither confirm or deny if such an investigation is going on.

However, KPLU-Radio in Tacoma says Kelley was the subject of scrutiny for some work done when he was working in the real estate title and escrow business.  He has been state auditor since 2013, prior to that, he worked as a state lawmaker.  According to KPLU:

"Court records show that in 2008 Kelley executed a series of wire transfers that resulted in nearly $4 million being moved to an account linked to an offshore account in Belize. At the time Kelley said all of his accounting and estate planning decisions were fully compliant with the law."

A spokesman for the auditor's office says any investigative activity that may be going on is not likely linked to any of his work as the state auditor.
