You may have received a St. Patrick's Day card in the past that said "Happy St. Patty's Day" in green glittery font. Meanwhile everyone in Ireland let out a collective groan! Here's why:

"Patty" is a female name (and, ahem, also what you call the inside of a burger), and is not to be ascribed in any sort of association to this feast day.

"Paddy," on the other hand, is perfectly acceptable. Yes, that's right: though they sound the same, "Paddy" is the correct short version of the name "Patrick."

In other news, St. Patrick used a three-leafed shamrock to teach about the Holy Trinity. That's right, four-leaf clovers don't have anything to do with St. Paddy's Day. You're welcome.
