Much like the Columbia Mammoth discovered last decade near Southwest Kennewick, now Yakima could be joining the archeological digging.

Monday, a construction crew doing excavating near Central Washington RV on South 18th Street felt their shovels hit something unusual.

Workers said they routinely dig up bones that turn out to be cows, dogs or animals, these looked human. And, the workers also found artifacts and what appeared to be crude, ancient stone tools.

Work was quickly stopped, and the Yakima County Coroner, Yakama Nation Indian Tribe, and the State Department of Archeology were notified.  While the investigation continues, some witnesses reported overhearing conversations by officials that these discoveries could possibly by hundreds or thousands of years old. If so, it would be the oldest "campsite" or archeology find in Yakima County history.

The bones mostly appeared to be arm or possibly leg bones, with a few others mixed in. Workers will continue to work around the archeologists as they sift through the site.
