According to Yakima County Sheriffs officials,  around 4:20 pm officers spotted a green Honda driving on HIghway 12 near Gleed, and learned a report was out that vehicle was stolen.

According to our sister station KIT-AM in Yakima, after attempting to pull the driver over,  the car then sped away and the chase resulted in speeds nearly 100 mph.  The driver then turned down Ackley Road, striking a fence.  When deputies approached the vehicle, they ordered the driver to turn off the engine and come out with his hands up, but he refused.  The 27-year old man, who's identity has not been released, revved up the engine, and gunned the car towards the deputies.

One of the officers was struck by the passing car, but fired several rounds as he was hit.  The driver sustained a fatal wound, and was pronounced dead at the scene.   Two other passengers, a 17-year-old male and 27-year-old female, were also arrested.

The incident occurred near the intersection of West Powerhouse and Naches Heights roads.  It's the 5th fatal shooting by a Yakima area law enforcement officer this year.
