Two people are in custody after authorities cracked a large mail theft operation in Moses Lake.

29-year-old Scott Slenker of Moses Lake, and 34-year-old Marisol Escamilla, also of Moses Lake, are in the Grant County jail after being arrested Saturday.

Around 7am, police received a report from a citizen who witnesses what they thought was mail theft in progress. The suspects were seen rifling through a mailbox near Paxon and Meadow View Drive in Moses Lake. They took the contents from the box, and fled.

Shortly afterward, their suspect vehicle was stopped by a Moses Lake officer, who saw evidence of other thefts in the back seat.  After an investigation, officials found 295 pieces of mail linked to at least 78 mailbox and postal locations.

Slenker and Escamilla were wearing black latex gloves when they were arrested. Authorities believe it was an effort to conceal possible fingerprints from the thefts, but also made it much easier to ID them during the traffic stop. The witness who called in the theft last Saturday mentioned both suspects looked strange because they were wearing....yes-black latex gloves.
