An exciting event is returning to the Tri-Cities, hasn't been held here since 1984!

The Tri-Cities Water Follies has just announced the Gold Cup for unlimited hydroplane racing will be staged in the Tri-Cities next summer.     The last time hydro racing's equivalent of the Daytona 500 was held here was in 1984,  and it's been held exclusively in Detroit since 1990.  The 2015 Water Follies will take place July 24-26th.

The Gold Cup is hydro racing's equivalent of NASCAR's Daytona 500, or the NFL's Super Bowl.

According to the Water Follies information release:

"The HAPO Gold Cup will mark the 50th anniversary of Unlimited Hydroplane Racing on the Columbia River between Richland, Kennewick and Pasco, Washington under the direction of the Tri-City Water Follies."

H1 Unlimited Chairman, and former standout driver Steve David,  is excited about bringing the cup back to the Columbia:

“When we talked to all of our race sites, they agreed unanimously that the 50th anniversary of the Tri-City race and the long standing support by the committee, volunteers and community made the Tri-City area and the Water Follies committee very deserving of the opportunity to host the 2015 Gold Cup.”

The 2015 H1 Unlimited season will kick off in Madison, Indiana July 3-5 with the Madison Regatta/Governors Cup.
