A Kennewick man got the shock of his life Tuesday night when he found an unexploded pipe bomb among a relative's belongings.

According to Kennewick Police Sergeant Ken Lattin, police responded to a call around 10 p.m. Tuesday night from someone in the 800 block of South Juniper Street.

The person told police a relative had recently died, and he had brought some of that person's belongings in a box to his home to go through them. Among the items found were various pieces of narcotic equipment and a 12-inch homemade pipe bomb!

The Richland Bomb Squad was called to the scene, and the device was retrieved by the squad's robot, then taken to a vacant lot away from homes and detonated. Police felt that was the safest method of disposal, rather than transport the potentially-unstable weapon through the city.

The KPD did not specify what types of narcotics equipment were found, nor the size of the pipe bomb.
