Surprising information from the Tax Foundation's latest study on which states in the US are the most, and least, tax friendly.

Using a variety of local, state, and federal tax data, the Foundation publishes their annual report of the best and worst states tax wise.    Washington made the top ten list largely because we do not have a state income tax, and because due to the billion dollar budget shortfall, legislators have been reluctant to pass significant new measures--unless  you consider Gregoire's temporary sales tax idea.   The Top Five most tax friendly states are:

1-Wyoming;  2-South Dakota; 3-Nevada; 4-Alaska;  5- Florida    Washington #7

The Least Tax Friendly states are :

50-New Jersey; 49-New York;  48-California; 47-Vermont; 46 Rhode Island.

But before we start thinking WA is a rosy place tax wise, our state does rank 18th in terms of most expensive unemployment insurance taxes.  And if Gregoire is able to get her 500 million sales tax pushed through, look for Washington to fall out of the top ten next year.
