Thursday night the City of Richland held a public hearing to review a draft Environmental Assessment for the Duportail Street Bridge Project.

Richland is accepting written comments from the public that will be accepted online or via mail sent to the City of Richland Public Works, Attn: Jeff Peters, PO Box 190 MS-26, Richland, WA 99352. The comment period ends April 3.

The City of Richland is in the planning stages of a four-lane bridge over the Yakima River to connect Duportail Street on each side of the river. City officials say the Durportail Bridge project is a high priority and will be supported by the Washington State Department of Transportation and by the Washington State Good Roads Transportation Association.

The new bridge will allow bikes, pedestrians and vehicles to travel between central and southern areas of Richland more effectively and will alleviate congestion on the I-182 and SR 240 corridors.

This bridge has been much anticipated since first proposed in 2007. The construction will last a year and will begin as soon as funds are available.
