Toppenish Has Had 19 Armed School Officials Since 2014
Perhaps at the time people didn't pay as much attention, but with the recent Florida high school incident, more focus being placed on school districts.
Toppenish School District has had 19 school officials who are armed since 2014. According to Yaktrinews.com, Superintendent John Cerna has been in favor of such a security measure since seeing the coverage of the Sandy Hook incident two years earlier.
The armed administrators are volunteer only, and receive firearms and active shooter training, as well as protective vests provided by the school district. Cerna says he wants their firepower to match the weapons used in the Parkland, Florida and Sandy Hook incidents.
No teachers are armed, but Cerna says there are "a lot" who are interested in doing so. Most of the administrators who carry have a 9MM Glock handgun.
