Two Suspects Arrested in Yakima Drive-By Shooting
The Pacific Northwest Violent Offenders Task Force arrested 19-year-old Jose Angel Ortega. Police believe Ortega was the shooter in the drive-by shooting on Sunday near 24th Avenue and Chestnut Avenue.
The shooting paralyzed 35-year old Jonathan Spear. Spear was working in his yard when Ortega allegedly opened fire. One of the bullets severed Spear's spine.
On Wednesday, detectives from the Yakima Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit located and arrested 22-year-old Gabriel Farias. Police believe Farias was driving the car Ortega was in.
Ortega is to be charged with Drive-By Shooting and 1st-Degree Assault. Farias is charged with rendering criminal assistance.
In a press release issued yesterday by the Yakima Police Department:
“I commend Yakima Police Department (YPD) Patrol Officer John Oliveri for finding the suspect vehicle within hours of the shooting and YPD Major Crimes Unit detectives for their tireless work bringing this case together so quickly,” YPD Captain Jay Seely said.
“This case will now be turned over to the prosecutor’s office and the two suspects will be held accountable in a court of law. My hope is this will help bring some relief to the shooting victim’s family and help the Barge-Chestnut area feel some restored sense of safety and security,” Seely said.
