Authorities Still Seeking Identity of Swordsman Shot by Police
The latest update in the incident from Sunday evening.
Sunday, shortly after 6:30pm, police responded to a call about a man walking, some say pacing, around 10th and Olympia, holding a sword. Information also indicates it appeared he was trying to conceal the weapon in a newspaper.
When two officers arrived in their police units, the man assaulted one of the officers, striking him in the head with the weapon. The policeman was able to retreat, he and the other officer opened fire, hitting the suspect.
Both the officer and suspect received treatment by emergency crews at the scene, but the suspect died at the TRIOS Southridge ER. The SIU (special investigations unit) is working the incident.
The names of the officers involved have not yet been released, and the coroner says they still have not been able to identify who the suspect was. An autopsy, says the Tri-City Herald, is scheduled for Wednesday morning on the suspect.
